There was a light on the dusty path to Damascus, and I lost my sandal in a dune.
There shouted past me: “Camel, camel! On your right!” So
I shuffled, one-footed, to the left and clocked my temple into stone—
I felt wet with blood, and could see the stars,
And a camel, once with two humps, now had
So there came upon that midnight clear a generous
witness of Jehovah who took me up and made me bread with
a flagon of mead.
And I believed on that Tuesday before the gate:
Yes, I believed in bread that raises up
and the need for proper footwear.
